No Comment – A Firefox Extension to Block YouTube Comments

14 Jul 2008

Sometimes web comment threads make me want to tear my eyes out.

Over lunch with Nicole Radziwill, I mentioned that I was considering writing a Firefox extension to block/remove the comment section on YouTube.  She loved the idea and promised to be my first download.  I have never found any positive value to these so-called “discussions” (comment threads, sort videos by “most discussed”).  YouTube has comments in true Web 2.0 fashion, but I’d rather do without them.

Maybe you disagree.  If you find value in YouTube comments, then I’ll give you a thumbs up on your next video comment, so long as I can find it…

The extension itself took less than ten minutes to build, from being nothing to being installed on Nicole’s computer across town.  I simply:

  1. wrote a quick Greasemonkey script to remove comment elements by ID on the page
  2. used Anthony Lieuallen’s Greasemonkey Compiler
  3. emailed the resulting xpi file to my first user, which could then be dragged-and-dropped into a running Firefox session

Then I spent some time writing about it and giving it shiny graphics for its homepage, all of which took nearly an order of magnitude longer than building the extension itself (and maybe that’s why programmers have business counterparts :-P).

You can get No Comment for yourself:

If No Comment should take off, it might give real data on how many people dislike comment threads enough to block them.  If not, it might suggest Nicole and I are in a minority.

This video gave me some inspiration.  Thanks College Humor!  This video is Not Safe For Work (NSFW).
